Grades for Mr. Fiero's Life Science 7th Grade Class

Listed below are the grades for all science periods and the Keys to Success! & SLANT

Grading Symbols:

"L" Late/"No Name"(lacking a name of author)--neither the assignment and/nor the "late work permission " form that the student was given to be signed by a parent/guardian has been received or it has been submitted but without name and not indentified or claimed yet. The late work form must be signed and attached to the late assignment in order to get credit when it is eventually submitted. The assignment will be graded as though on time but of course accuracy and if it fulfills all directions (completeness) will be taken into account just like any other assignment. See syllabus for more explanation.

"A" Absence-need to make up and will become 'late/missing' status and then a zero score if not made up soon. See "daily agenda" for information about work that you missed. All absent work should be turned in with the word 'ABSENT' clearly printed on the top of the page.

"I" Incomplete assignment- It will receive partial credit if it is completed and submitted in short time (post-haste) even though it was returned to the student and then resubmitted late.

"Ch" Cheating- No points (score) awarded. The document(s) are kept for teacher records and usually the parents are notified.

Great grades are accomplished by those with great attitudes! Break through your obstacles and just do it for yourself!!

Failure is a part of success--learn and move on to your goals and dreams!

Keys to Success!

1. Time Management

Use your binder reminder to plan your week for English, history, math, and science. Fill in the Binder reminder calendar very Monday so you know what homework you have each night for the week and when assignments are due.  Check your Binder Reminder every morning before you go to school.

2. Organized Notebook/Backpack

Take 5-10 minutes to check your notebook and backpack each week. Make sure there are no assignments you forgot to turn in. Throw out any unnecessary papers.

3.  Turn In Assignments When They Are Due 

This may sound obvious, but many students finish assignments, then don’t turn them in.  Put completed assignments in the front of your notebook section for each class.  When you walk into math, open the front of your math section to find your most recent work.  If it is going to be collected, take it out and have it ready to turn in.  Do the same for each class. 

4. Take Advantage of Extra Credit

Extra credit is offered in all Team Columbia classes.  If you are not sure about what it is, how to do it, or when it is due, ask your teacher.  Extra credit is used to boost your grade and not to replace doing regular assignments or projects.

5.     Study/Phone Buddy

It is helpful to study with a friend; that does not mean copying someone else’s work.  If you can’t study with a friend, at least have a friend’s phone number to ask about make-up work, instructions, difficult assignments, etc.

6. Active Listening

Practice active listening in class.  The steps are:

1.      Sit up in your seat. Helps you in being alert.

2.      Maintain eye contact with the speaker. Helps you keep focus.

3.      Repeat in your mind what the speaker is saying. Learning requires repetition.

4.      Ask yourself, “What should I be learning or understanding?” ... "What are presenter's main points?"

7. Help From Home

Ask your parents or somebody else who might be able to help you solve math problems, proofread your written work, quiz you for tests, or offer advice about projects.  We welcome the expertise of your relatives and neighbors. 

8. Develop Study Skills and Strategies Flash Cards:.

Outlining:                  I.  Human Body

A.     Organization of the Body

1.      Cells are basic units of the body.

2.      Groups of cells with similar function make up tissues of which ther are four basic types.

 Summarizing:         The main idea of the story/section was…

                                    The main characters/concepts were…

 Note-taking: Take neat notes during class discussions and especially during test reviews.  Notes may be used on tests ocassionally.

Study Guides and thinking maps:  These are helpful in preparing for tests, use them!!

Quizzing: Have somebody quiz you the morning of the test. 

Vocabulary Games with flashcards!

9.  Be Test Wise 

Become familiar with each teacher’s test pattern.   Mr. Fiero has a chapter section quiz every week.  Mrs. Reinhold has a daily quiz .  Mrs. James and Mrs. Shaw have daily math quizzes, and Ms. Bretthauer has vocabulary quizzes, Accelerated Reading Tests, etc.

10.  Quality Work

• Full Name, Period and Date on every paper
• Full title and details about assignment like page and question numbers and Chapter and section.
• Indent start of every paragraph if your write in narrative/essay form.
• Proofreading is absolutely necessary.  We expect correct spelling and punctuation in every class.  We also expect thoughtful answers in complete sentences; not fragmented responses.
• Completely answering questions with thoughtful answers that refer to facts.concepts in the text or notes.

 Example: Question: How did Emperor Wen finally reunify China? 

A “C” answer –          by tradition, public works projects, and education

An “A” answer -           Emperor Wen reunified China by using three techniques.  First, he brought back the traditions and rituals of the ancient Chinese emperors.  This reminded people of their common history.  Next, he organized public works such as the Great Wall and the rebuilding of the capital of Changan.  These focused people’s attentions on the common goals of the empire.  Last, he renewed interest in scholarship by founding new colleges and calligraphy and accounting schools.

11.Absences

When you miss school you should:

A.                 Check the classes' websites.

B.                 Call your study/phone buddy

C.                 Ask your teammates about the work when your return.

D.                 Check with your teachers to make sure you acquire the missed assignments.

E.                  Turn in the work due when you were absent when you return or within a few days.

F.                  Be familiar with the school rules about absences and tardies.

12.Extra Help

Team Columbia teachers are available for out-of-class help for those students who want and need a little extra help.
